Dexter Film Opening
Dexter Film Opening
What is shown in this opening?
In the opening to Dexter, there is an adult going through a typical morning routine which includes
- Showering
- prepare for breakfast
- shaving
- Flossing
- dressing up
Micro elements
Mise-en-scene
There are many shots which shows scene where blood is included which may represent that the main character himself is very violent. He is very organised with his routine as he follows it and he is cleans up things very neatly such as when he cleans off the blood. This in my opinion suggest that he is a killer as he is very organized and clears out tracks of blood.
Camerawork
There has been a use of many extreme close up and close up in this opening.
Editing
The shots where he starts cooking the food and eating them are quick shots which shows the audience that he is violent.
Sound
Two types of sound were used to create meaning in this opening
Diegetic
There was a use of equipment in the house which created sound such as the razor shaving off his facial hair. Other equipment such as the coffee machine and the pan cooking the meat and eggs were used. These sounds which were created had a little increase in sound volume which creates unnatural feeling towards such normal things that happen to peoples everyday life.
Non-diegtic
The non diegetic used in Dexter was a creepy soundtrack where it creates discomfort to the audience. There is also sound of the blood dripping and when he winked.
The non diegetic used in Dexter was a creepy soundtrack where it creates discomfort to the audience. There is also sound of the blood dripping and when he winked.
These two shapes represents two sides of the main character where the triangle is a sharp object which slices apart the circle which has been shown in the opening such as when the character sliced the oranges with the knife, the part where he blended the beans and when he broke the eggs in half to cook his breakfast.
Thriller VS Horror
Thriller VS Horror
Thriller
Before I go to sleep
In thrillers, the films show that they are living in a world of reality and are dealing with human which is normal. Are usually in a modern life and creates tension for the audience. The characters in thriller have to deal with new knowledge.
The woman in black 2
In horror films, it is usually fantasy as they have to deal with the supernatural which are ghosts. The audiences reaction to these type of films are fear as ghosts are unnatural and are usually horrified and get scared when the supernatural appears. It is difficult to predicts whats going to happen when dealing with the supernatural which makes it terrifying for the audience.

Seven Sub genres/Genres
Seven Sub genres/Genres
Seven is not only a thriller, it could also include of
- Mystery
This film could also include mystery because the characters are confused to what is going on with the mission that they are doing as the bad guy is tricking the main characters.
- Film Noir
This can also be a film noir as there is a connection between the character and his family which is interfering with his work on the mission. It is making the main characters to think for a choice to make between work or family.
- Crime Fiction
This film concludes of crime fiction definitely as the characters deal with crimes created from the bad guy. The characters have to also deal with the victims that are murdered.
- Action
There was a use of gunplay and lots of fighting to kill the murderer of the victims which was used by addition of stunts.
Saul Bass
Saul Bass
Saul Bass born on the 8th of May, 1920, was an american graphic designer, film director and a title designer, He was innovative in his work and wanted to move on with the sequence and was the first one to create meaning from just the title of the film to build up the story, feeling of what is expected from it.
He created the opening for vertigo which was very new to the studio and many were shocked about his worked which actually made the title create meaning towards the film. Many people in the industry were convinced that it were not to work very well as it was a brand new idea.
He also created the poster for the film Vertigo.

Heat Write Up
Heat
This is a very high angle shot where it shows the area of the bank,
where everyone is located and where the robbery might take place. An overview
of the bank is showing us that the robber has entered the location and is
spotting for security. You can notice that the bank is very busy with the
amount of people where the robber can get in easier because it is crowded. This
scene was taken to show that everyone was on their own work and hasn’t spotted
the robber.
This is a big close-up shot where it only shows the audience the robbers
face. He is now very suspicious and looking around the area of the bank to
locate all security so that he and his crew would be able to plan a bank
robbery. It shows that he is not too suspicious and trying to feel calmed so
that people won’t recognize by his expressions that he is trying to rob.
This is a long shot which allows us to see the robber running through
the workers in the bank who are kneeling on the floor. This scene is where the
robber is running to another robber to be able to get out of the area as soon
as possible. This shot is taken to show that the robbers are trying to get out
of the bank quickly and are in a rush.
This is a medium long shot which is showing us the police pushing his
way through to get the robbers by shouting off the pedestrians away from his
way. This shows us that the police is walking quickly because there is
something he has to go do and if he doesn’t get there on time the robbers can
have a chance to escape. This was taken because it shows us that he is in a
hurry to reach the bank to meet the robbers.
2 shot is another technique which has been used in this rob scene of
this movie. In this 2 shot scene you can see both of the robbers in the same
shot. This shows us that there is a relationship between each other with same
dress code and both carrying a bag which makes them try to look like workers in
the bank. They both have same facial expression and are trying to move quickly
so that police won’t spot them.
This scene is a mid-close-up shot which shows some background behind the
police who is rushing to the bank. This scene shows his face expression which
is to spot the robbers if they had already came out. He is alert of what might
happen next. This scene shows us that the police are aiming to get to the bank
and deal with the robbers as soon as they get there due to his expressions.
This shot is taken from a high angle which shows us that the police is
checking on the person if he is still alive or not. This scene shows us that
the police is trying to help him but he does not survive it as he has been
shot. It is a devastating part of the robbery scene for the police but he has
to carry on to get the robbers.
This scene is where the robber is trying to escape and shooting other
police by carrying a girl so that they would not try to shoot him. But as the other police came behind him he
turned around and was shot by the police. But before he shot, the facial
expression says it all in this close-up shot where he is terrified by the
police aiming at his head and the robber felt that he will get killed. This
shot shows us that the robber is frightened but has no other choice but to die
as he is being aimed by the police.
